The liver can store vitamin B12 for an extended period, so you may not notice symptoms right away.

- Have an autoimmune disorder that involves the endocrine glands, such as Addison’s disease, type 1 diabetes, Graves’ disease, or vitiligo.
- Have certain digestive diseases that may prevent your body from properly absorbing vitamin B12, such as Crohn’s disease.
- Take medicines that prevent your body from properly absorbing vitamin B12. Examples of such medicines include antibiotics, certain seizure medicines, antacids, heartburn medicines such as omeprazole and pantoprazole, and metformin. Researchers found that taking proton pump inhibitors (like Prilosec and Nexium) for more than two years was linked to a 65 percent higher risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, while two years taking H2 receptor blocker drugs (such as Pepcid and Zantac) was associated with a 25 percent higher chance of deficiency.
- Are a strict vegetarian who doesn’t eat any animal or dairy products and doesn’t take a vitamin B12 supplement.
- If you don’t eat a variety of foods or have a poor diet overall.
Older people can be at a greater risk of vitamin B12 deficiency since they are more likely to have a lower production of stomach acid, underlying health conditions, and be taking medications that may cause vitamin absorption issues. It is important to keep these factors in mind and to discuss them with your trusted practitioner.
How to treat vitamin B12 deficiency
With proper treatment, symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency usually begin to improve within a few days. You can get natural vitamin B12 from animal foods like dairy products, eggs, fish, meat, and poultry, or from items that have been fortified with the vitamin. Yeast extract also contains vitamin B12. Some plant foods like seaweed, algae, and tempeh contain vitamin B12, but scientists debate if these forms of the vitamin can be absorbed by the body.
